Welcome to the Miller Single Trigger Company.

The early twentieth century is often regarded as the period in which the double barreled, side by side shotgun reached its zenith.  By this time its form had been molded and polished to a level of near perfection.  The graceful sculpting of actions, flowing lines of stock work and the mechanical genius of bolting, cocking and automatic ejection of spent shells seemed to leave little room for improvement.  Still, the doublegun was king of the field and the traps, and as such, each manufacturer strove to continuously improve their product lines in order to set themselves apart from their competition.

Enter the single trigger.

The desire to be the first to produce a reliable single trigger mechanism was intense.  Each manufacturer set their best minds to the task and independent inventors also sprang forth with their own versions.  Scores of patents emerged during this period and the varying attempts at solving the mechanical issues surrounding the single trigger were mind boggling.

Not only did the single trigger need to position itself to fire the correct barrel first, it had to reposition itself to fire the second barrel and again reset for the first barrel upon recocking.  Most importantly, it had to do this without doubling, which was a mystery until the phenomenon of the "involuntary pull" was discovered.  Many ideas found their way to production, some worked, many didn't.

In the 1920's, a complete and elegant solution arose from the fertile mind of one Mr. Elmer E. Miller (pictured at right while attending the 1932 Grand American).  Miller was a gifted gunsmith and inventor who resided in the small town of Millersburg, Pennsylvania.  He was awarded six patents during the aforementioned decade which culminated in a single trigger system that proved to be one of the most simple and reliable ever devised.  The heart of the Miller Trigger is a one-piece trigger body containing a transversely oscillating, sear operated trip.  To solve the problem of the "involuntary pull", Miller installed a spring loaded inertia block behind the trigger body which worked against a guide to deactivate the trigger during the second pull.  Initially, the system utilized a barrel selector which was integrated with the top tang safety.  In later years, Elmer and his son Howard developed a selector which was mounted in front of the trigger which served admirably as well.

Miller found great success with his trigger system and installed thousands of them through the twentieth century.  The Miller Trigger has been adapted to Parker, Fox, L.C. Smith and Ithaca guns along with many Anson & Deeley type boxlocks of varying manufacture.  The Millers further adapted their system for over and under shotguns like the Remington Model 32.  They also spent considerable time working on innovative set triggers for bolt action rifles.  Howard Miller continued the business after Elmer's passing and was awarded patents of his own, including one relating to an improvement of the forward mounted barrel selector.

The year 2000 saw the passing of the Miller Single Trigger Company torch with the sale of the company to Mr. Doug Turnbull, Chief Executive Officer of the current Turnbull Manufacturing Company in Bloomfield, NY.  Mr. Turnbull carried on the great tradition that is Miller Trigger, providing installations of new triggers and repair services for existing triggers.  In addition to the professional service that Mr. Turnbull has provided, he is also to be commended for greatly enhancing and modernizing the process of installing the Miller system.

We are pleased to announce that the Miller Single Trigger torch has once again been passed.  On May 25, 2010, Classic Gunstocks, LLC purchased the Miller Single Trigger Company from Turnbull Manufacturing.  We are very excited to have the opportunity to continue the grand tradition of the Miller Trigger.  We are now accepting orders for new trigger installations and we will be providing service for existing Miller Triggers.  At this time, we are limiting our new installations to Parker, Fox and Ithaca NID models.  It is our intention to add other models to this list in the future and will update this website with any additions.  We are offering both selective and non-selective trigger systems, please see the Price page for details.  Selective triggers will utilize the trigger mounted selector only, tang safety selectors are not an option at this time.
